My Year of Intention Begins

It's Saturday evening, February 4th, 2017. I've been toying with the idea of extreme frugality and a buy nothing year for a few weeks now. Something always pops up. I needed to stock up on food for a huge snow storm. I needed to buy a box of hair dye. I needed new hair ties. My kids needed new shoes and boots (this was actually completely legit--they have been wearing the same boots for a year and they were SHOT). Tonight D. brought home Chinese food for supper.

Sigh.

But I've had a few successes. I've started preparing meals using pantry staples (split pea soup, beans and rice, etc.) and I've started making better choices at the grocery store.

I decided to start this low-profile blog for accountability. I've read many, many personal development, personal finance, frugality blogs and they almost always start at some level of success. I am at rock bottom. I'm forty-five and swimming in debt. Student loans and credit card debt, but no mortgage because we can't afford to buy a house in our high cost-of-living town. I like my job as a university professor well enough but would be thrilled to become financially independent and retire early. I long to fulfill my dream of becoming a successful writer. I have two small children (ages 4 and 7) and want to give them a good life. I'm ready to sacrifice small daily indulgences for long-term peace of mind.

This is just a quick entry to kick things off. I'll write a longer and more detailed post soon.
